Summit Students take science all three years, beginning with Biological Sciences and the Environment, then Physical Sciences and the Earth, followed by either Chemistry/Physics or Accelerated Chemistry/Physics. Biological Sciences and the Environment and Physical Sciences and the Earth meet the middle school Science Standards. By 8th grade, students are placed into either Chemistry/Physics, or Accelerated Chemistry/Physics both of which emulates the high school level pre-IB course in Chemistry/Physics. The main difference between the two is pacing with the Accelerated Chemistry/Physics course making use of the student’s established math skills while time is given to support math skills in the Chemistry/Physics course. Observing relationships, identifying variables, calculating with significant figures, developing explanation through observation and analysis and laboratory methods are emphasized.
